Pierrette Sherwood Papillon Creations Dawson Trail

Immerse yourself in the story of Canada’s first road West: The Dawson Trail! The Dawson Trail heritage tour is a self-driven tour that extends over 240 km (or 150 miles) from the Southeast corner of the province to the city of Winnipeg (Saint-Boniface). It would be ambitious to see it all in one day, so I offer travelers the following 2-hour options that are specific to the “heart of the Dawson Trail” communities located between Richer and Lorette.

Dawson Trail Guided Tours

I am the artist and founder of the Dawson Trail Arts and Heritage Tours, with years of experience in tourism.  My guided tours and local experiences are relevant to the rich culture and legacy of the Dawson Trail, including intimate insights and anecdotes of the people, events and places that forever changed the communities of the Dawson Trail and Canada as a Nation.

The following 2 hour options that are specific to the “heart of the Dawson Trail” communities located between Richer and Lorette.   Also, my partner and I are both members of the Dawson Trail Art Tour so we are happy to include time for shop local options. Drop me a line to discuss options and we can tailor experiences to your needs and/or your groups and/or specific areas of interests.  I can create a tour on demand if I’m available or can change the time of day if based on availability. Hosted in French or English.  I take a minimum of 2 adults and a maximum of 4 on these tours (limit does not apply to private tours).

The Dawson Trail Journey

We’ll start the tour with an overview of the Dawson Trail commemorative project over tea at my home along the Dawson Trail.  Next, we’ll head to the Dawson Trail Park for an intimate look at the making of “The Journey” metal mural featuring five key themes relevant to the Dawson Trail, and explore the story of the lost gold that has stirred the imagination of both locals and travelers for over 150 years. We’ll carry on to the Dawson Trail Museum which serves as a local museum and community hub.  The Romanesque style church officially designated a Municipal Heritage Site in 2015 is home to special exhibits and artifacts from the region.  We’ll carry on to the Corduroy Road themed exhibit at Millar Drive and finish at the Thurston Drive Park for a look at the art and interpretive elements that celebrate some of the key historic figures and events that marked the construction headquarters of the Trail at La Coulée, an area also known as “Mist-amisk-amo” in Anishnaabemowin.

Length: 2 - 2.5 hours, minimum two adults

Price: $50.00 per adult, kids from 5-12 years old are $5*

*Includes admission to the Dawson Trail Museum

Note: Unless otherwise specified, the price includes transportation in my van.

Where The Forest Meets the Prairies

This tour will focus on the markers and exhibits within the Town of Sainte-Anne and La Coulée in the RM of Ste. Anne, also known as Markers #6-9 or the “Great Beaver Way” on the Dawson Trail Heritage Tour.  I’ll speak to the events that “sparked” the Resistance of the Red River Métis in the region, and delve deeper into the early rapport between the Métis, French Canadian pioneers and the Saulteaux Anishinaabe of this region, including the formal land trade made between Chief Big Ears and local farmer Jean-Baptiste Desautels.  I’ll also touch upon the flora and fauna of the Trail, the medical properties of a sampling of local herbs used by the Métis and Indigenous communities, discuss the three distinct biomes of the Trail and visit the landmark where the edge of the forest opens onto the great prairie landscape.  We’ll finish the tour at Marker 6, with an overview of the construction headquarters of the Dawson Trail at the Thurston Drive Park in La Coulée.

Length 2 hours, minimum 2 adults

Price: $40 per adult, kids from 5-12 years old are $5

We look forward to seeing you on the Dawson Trail!
